2024 Playground Project
The Washington playground committee has been working toward a new playground for some time, and our community has shown up in a BIG way!! From completing LMI surveys, donating items, promoting, supporting our fundraisers, and making donations, we could not be more excited!
The City of Washington is working with North Central Regional Planning Commission (NCRPC) to submit a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in an effort to obtain grant funding, which could provide a substantial amount toward the project.
Donations and fundraiser support have been tremendous, and our committee is excited for some fun and unique ways that folks can support our project.
STAY TUNED for more updates!
History
In the late 1990s, a dedicated group of volunteers joined together with the City of Washington to fundraise and build a new playground for our community. It took $90,000, 42,000 screws, six miles of lumber, 14,000 volunteer hours and one Kansas community coming together to construct Munchkinland playground in Washington’s City Park. A coordinating committee worked for more than a year on organizing the construction of the playground, fund-raising events and gathering donations.
Since that time, countless children and families have created memories in our beautiful park. As time passed, however, the playground has reached the end of its' anticipated lifespan.
Plans
The new playground will replace the existing structure, and will feature up to date technology and increased accessibility features, with a longer life span and minimal maintenance.
